History and Mystery" Article!
The Quest for Origins of Ancient
Etruria
In Summer 2004, our documentary team visited the beautiful and ancient land of Italy to
document a quest for the lost mysteries of the Etruscans. We spent time
with Professor Graziano Baccolini who has discovered
some
interesting theories about the mysterious Etruscan
past that involve ancient oracles, Near Eastern and Egyptian connections, and stones known as 'omphalos' that have
religious and mystical importance. Its a fascinating inquiry-soon to be
an episode of our series.

Explore your knowledge of Exploration History!
Enhance your Vintage Adventure visit by challenging your
knowledge of exploration history with this quick quiz! Please write down your
answers (sorry- no high-tech pop-up quiz window here- consider it a vintage
way to take a quiz!) and click 'here' or click on the 'History and Mystery'
stone above for the answers, or to find out more about the booklet and the
other titles soon to be included in this upcoming 'micro' library for
today's modern travelers and explorers on the go!
1. Who is believed to have discovered the North Pole first in 1909?
What other explorer contested this and claimed he was the first?
2. Who discovered Macchu Picchu in 1911?
3. Who made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic? (Its
not who you think- Lindberg made the first SOLO non-stop flight across the
Atlantic.)
4. Who discovered the colossal stone heads in Mexico in 1939 and what
is the name of the civilization these heads are ascribed to?
5. Who were the first 'aquanauts' to voyage to the bottom of the
Marianas Trench- also known as the Challenger Deep? What was the name
of the vessel they used? Who designed it?
6. What seafaring explorer set out to cross the Atlantic in a reed
boat in 1970? What ancient city did he visit that was 265 miles north of his
departure city of Safi, Morocco? The city was known to ancient Romans,
even then, as 'The Eternal City' because of its advanced age.
Can it still be found and visited today?
7. Who discovered the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro in India in 1924?
8. What author and explorer found, only as recently as in 1992, the
legendary city of Ubar, in the sands of Arabia?
9. Which pistol-packing botanist endured bandits, harsh weather, and savage terrain in 1925 to
pursue a quest to find China's holy mountains?
10. Besides Jacques Cousteau, can you name another pioneer in fhe
field of underwater exploration with a self-contained underwater breathing
apparatus? (SCUBA)

Is Atlantis Out There?
Its been the quest of countless historians,
explorers, adventurers, and yes, even a few archaeologists. Since the
first mention of this mysterious land by Plato, man has contemplated the
existence of Atlantis, and its possible location. It has occupied an intriguing
reign in the world of fiction as well- in fact, its the main quest in Mike Olafson's new Legacy of Atlantis fiction series. (see above) But did
Atlantis truly exist? For an exciting adventure to decide for yourself, you can join Author/Explorer George Erikson and pursue these lost
mysteries. For more details go to:
www.atlantisinamerica.com,
and tell him the gang at Vintage Adventure sent you! Mr.
Erikson was featured in a special which has aired on the History
Channel. The program documented his work regarding the pursuit of
Atlantis and its history. He has agreed to appear in a future episode
of Vintage Adventure to begin on location in Central America soon. Be
sure to read his book, Atlantis in America, from Adventures Unlimited
Press, available for purchase at most major retail bookstores and most
online bookstores.
